[voice - morning of 007]
[Hikaru's voice sounds tired and anxious.]
Rin's missing. She hasn't been in the building since yesterday, and...
Ah, I figured you should probably know, ma'am. Please, if you know where she is, let me know, okay?
no subject
Another one? Where did she go?! Don't tell me...
[ Her voice goes quiet and stiff. ]
Don't tell me she went out to the ship, too. When was the last time you saw her?
no subject
[She cuts herself off with a deep exhale, steeling herself from wincing against Felix's tone.]
No, she didn't go out to the boat.
I saw her two nights ago - we talked for a little while on the beach and then went inside. I didn't see her at all the next morning, but I figured she might have gone out with a guard, maybe? She just... she never came back...
no subject
[ Felix groans quietly. ]
All right...all right. So she hasn't been seen since Wednesday night. What the fuck have you kids been doing? Don't you know it's dangerous out there? You better not be thinking of leaving, either, you hear me?
no subject
Now all they've told us is that we can't leave without being with a guard.
[The only thing she can assume is that maybe whoever had shot at the others while they were on the ship had gotten angry, sending all these soldiers onto the island. But... why were they on the boat in the first place? And why guard them so viciously? Weren't they supposed to be helping the world??
...]
Dr. Felix... what's going on?
no subject
[ There's the sound of a creaking chair as she sits up straight. ]
It wasn't dangerous before they got here. The guards aren't with Site B, and neither is the son of a bitch who made those announcements. He does work with the Foundation--he designed security for this place, and our demented boss is the one who called him back to the island--but he decided to take over the whole project after what happened on his ship. No one was going to argue with his private army.
Especially not after we lost people already.
[ Dr. Felix sniffs, and continues sternly. ]
Things are going to be different around here for a while. He wants control of everything, including all of you.
I won't let him have it.
no subject
[Dr. Felix sounded so cross - not in annoyance as Hikaru had first heard her, but more like listening to Umi when she was starting to get angry about something very important.]
Why would he want control over us? We're only here to try and make things better, aren't we? I know there's not many of us here, but everyone was saying that we're supposed to save the world! We're not dangerous...
[She bites back the need to ask if saving the world was supposed to be a good thing. Yes, in her head, she wants to believe that. But the last time she had considered herself a savior to a world, it had only ended in disaster.
Her head spun. She ached for the chance to find out what was going on and find a way to save this world. But these people that were appearing and taking over... what did they want? Were they like Zagato - appearing to be evil in one light while fighting for a grander purpose that couldn't be understood form the surface?
What was she supposed to believe?]
...Why would this man need an army here, Doctor?
no subject
[ Felix doesn't wait for an agreement before she surges forward. ]
His name is Beaumont. He used to work at Site A, the facility that came before this one, on a different island. They had a completely different approach to the cloning project. Instead of working with you and counseling you through your adjustment, the purpose of Site A was to make you into tools--weapons that could be fired at will.
The truth is...you and the others have the capacity for incredible power. But. It always manifests with incredible violence. The early clones were so unstable that this horrible change could come over them at any time, so the researchers at Site A kept them under complete control.
Beaumont wants to do the same to all of you now. He doesn't believe that you were made without the risk of this catastrophic event. He thinks you're all on a time limit until you turn into monsters, and he wants to eliminate the risk.
no subject
Tools? Weapons? Was that what they'd really been brought here for? Given power, told that they had a greater purpose, only to use that power for horrible things? To destroy rather than save?
She can feel her fingers digging into her palms hard, but she doesn't care. This couldn't be Cephiro all over again! She couldn't accept that! Not after she'd promised to find a way to help.
As soon as the last sentence is out of Felix's mouth, Hikaru's blustered voice cuts in.]
We're not monsters! We're people! We're people, just like you! Just like him! We have homes and families and loved ones... We're not just things to be used!
You... you've all been so kind to us. You know we aren't-- [Her voice shudders, and she swallows hard.] Why would he do such a horrible thing??? Can't he just trust us?
no subject
[ Apparently Felix's fear-fueled sympathy only goes so far. Now that the cat's out of the bag, she is mean and efficient as ever. She acquiesces only in part. ]
I know you're not monsters. I know. It won't make a difference if he forces you through the process.
If.
That little--Rin. Rin had the right idea, if she really did run off into the jungle.
[ Rowena chuckles. ]
Listen for me at midnight. I have a plan, and we have a little time before we put it into action.
Until then, I need you to be a model prisoner, all right? Don't argue with the guards, don't sneak around, and don't let them see you playing on your stupid walkie. And, above all, keep your mouth shut. I told you about this because I knew you'd try to stick your nose anywhere you could find answers. Now that you have them, your job is to hold and wait for my signal.
You're going to be okay, Hikaru.
And if Rin shows up, tell her to go back into hiding.
[ Felix hangs up. ]
Audio - Day 7 (Noon)
Except not really, and Elraine hates that she can't think of how to get back to the Bungalow on her own. Or that she can't convince Kirk to leave Lady's apartment. This is a begrudging attempt of sort of maybe getting help. Also, she's never ever going to drink alcohol again, and her device didn't explode.
At least her dire need to escape from the smell of beer has made her teach herself how to make calls.]
....Dr Felix, do you know when the escort rule will end?
no subject
[ Dr. Felix is hushed and hurried, as if she's trying to finish the call before someone gets close enough to hear. ]
I thought I told you to call only for emergencies. You better be hemorrhaging.
no subject
No, but it's still important. I relocated without an escort, and the chances of being noticed and shot at during the day is most likely higher than at night.
no subject
[ A long, groaning sigh. ]
We're going to figure this out. Where are you? Don't leave yet. You're right about one thing: they won't be happy to see you walking about.
no subject
Ms Ueta's apartment. I'm not leaving. [She'd rather not end up full of bullets anyways.]
no subject
I know she didn't let you in!
no subject
[If Kirk's not coming with her, the least she can do is keep him a secret. (Despite the fact that she thinks it's a bad idea and she hates lying.)]
Do...you know where she is? What happened to her?
no subject
Elraine, if she understands the walkies well enough by now, might think she hung up.
Finally, tersely: ]
That psychopath killed her. The one in charge of all these guards. Beaumont.
So it's very important that we do this carefully.
How fast can you run?
no subject
Beaumont the governor. Why would he be in such a place?! It's so hard to believe that Lady's been killed, although she doesn't think her adviser would be sick enough for such a cruel joke.]
V-very fast...
no subject
[ Elraine is left with the empty company of a holding tone for nearly ten minutes. This is time best spent reflecting on the news.
Sucks, don't it?
Felix's voice snaps back into her ear without warning after the long recess. ]
All right, here's what's going to happen. In about two minutes, an alarm by the wall is going to activate. You should be able to hear it from Lady's bungalow, and so will the guards posted nearby. Those hair-trigger douchebags are waiting for something like this. They'll all run after the noise like a pack of stupid dogs.
That's when you get out.
I know you're not far from B-1. You can make it.
Just put something over that ridiculous blue hair so you don't reflect the sun at them.
no subject
Alright, I will. [She doesn't really think about asking what the wall is. Too much information already to deal with.]
Will you be okay?
